Alphabet letters to numbers chart
Each letter's number is its position in the alphabet. The A = 0 column is used in programming and in some ciphers; the last column is the phone key that carries the letter.
| Letter | A = 1 | A = 0 | Phone key |

The A1Z26 cipher
Writing A as 1 and Z as 26 is called the A1Z26 cipher. It shows up in puzzle hunts, escape rooms, geocaches and TV mysteries; the cartoon Gravity Falls famously hid A1Z26 messages in its end credits. It is a simple substitution: every letter always gets the same number, so it hides nothing from someone who knows the trick. The converter above works as an A1Z26 decoder too: paste the numbers into the second box.
Accents are removed before converting, so É counts as E and Ç as C. Letters from other alphabets are skipped.
How to use it as a letters to numbers translator
- Separators matter when decoding. 1-12-5 is A-L-E, but 1125 could also be A-A-B-E, K-B-E, A-A-Y or K-Y. Always keep the dashes or spaces.
- Words: the converter puts a slash between words. When decoding, use a slash or two spaces between words.
- Sum: the total under the numbers adds up every letter's value, which some word puzzles ask for. (HELLO = 52.)
Phone letters to numbers
On a phone keypad, 2 carries ABC, 3 DEF, 4 GHI, 5 JKL, 6 MNO, 7 PQRS, 8 TUV and 9 WXYZ. Businesses use this to turn their number into a word. Type the word number into the phone box and dial the digits it gives: 1-800-FLOWERS becomes 1-800-3569377.
How we tested
"Hello world" gave 8 5 12 12 15 / 23 15 18 12 4 with a sum of 124, and the dash and A = 0 options changed it as expected. 20-8-1-14-11 / 25-15-21 gave THANK YOU, and 27 gave ? with the warning. "Crème brûlée" lost its accents before converting, and 1-800-FLOWERS gave 1-800-3569377. We ran the page in Chromium at desktop width and at 375 px: no sideways scrolling and no console errors. Not tested yet: Safari on iPhone and Firefox.
Questions
What number is each letter of the alphabet?
A is 1, B is 2, C is 3 and so on up to Z, which is 26. The chart above lists all 26, plus the version that starts at A = 0.
How do I convert numbers to letters?
Replace each number with the letter in that position: 1 = A, 2 = B, up to 26 = Z. Paste the numbers into the second box, separated by spaces or dashes, and the letters appear.
What is the A1Z26 cipher?
A code where each letter is replaced by its number in the alphabet, A as 1 and Z as 26. The name simply describes the rule: A is 1, Z is 26.
Why do I get a question mark?
A number is outside 1 to 26 (or 0 to 25 when Start at A = 0 is ticked), or several numbers were written together without a separator. Add spaces or dashes between the numbers.
How do I turn a phone number with letters into digits?
Type it into the phone box. Each letter becomes the key it is printed on: ABC = 2, DEF = 3, GHI = 4, JKL = 5, MNO = 6, PQRS = 7, TUV = 8, WXYZ = 9.
